McVitie's Jaffa Cakes The Original 12 Cakes 132g is the original Jaffa Cake, twelve to a pack - sponge base, orange jelly disc and dark chocolate top, introduced in 1927.
Product Highlights & Features
- Cake, legally: A 1991 VAT tribunal had to decide whether a Jaffa Cake was a cake or a biscuit, because chocolate biscuits carry VAT in Britain and cakes do not. It found cake - partly because cakes go hard when stale and biscuits go soft, and a Jaffa Cake goes hard.
- The three layers: Genoise sponge, a set orange jelly and a thin dark chocolate top. The jelly is the part most imitations get wrong.
- How to eat one: The full-moon, half-moon, total-eclipse method from the 1990s adverts is still how most British people describe it.
About McVitie's: McVitie's was founded in 1830 by Robert McVitie on Rose Street in Edinburgh. Its employee Alexander Grant created the digestive biscuit in 1892, and the firm has since produced the Jaffa Cake (1927) and the Hobnob (1985). It is now part of pladis.
