A cat sits in the Mona Lisa's place — dark grey face, amber eyes, white whiskers and a soft ruff of pale fur at the chest — wearing her brown gown with its gathered gold sleeves and dark veil. The Renaissance landscape is intact behind: a winding road, a still lake, blue-grey mountains under a pale green sky. The paint is cracked and warmly varnished, as though the portrait had hung for centuries.
